How To Write A CV

The first step to securing a job interview is to know how to write a CV.

A Professional and well written Curriculum Vitae can mean the difference between being selected for a job interview and loosing out on an opportunity to present your experience and qualifications to a potential employer.

  • To start your CV you need to provide some important general information like your full name and contact details. It is important to provide more than one method of contacting you, as there is nothing more frustrating for a potential employer or recruiter than not being able to get hold of candidates. Mobile number and Email Address should suffice.

Depending on which part of the world you are applying for and the Industry you’re in, you can add more personal information like gender, nationality and age. Though in most part of the world it is not essential information that is required on a CV or during the application stages.

The information you provide when writing a CV, should be current and up to date.

  • It is recommended to include an objective or career goal, describing your ambition and the type of role you are looking for. This should be kept brief and no longer than 3 lines.

  • Include your education and qualifications by starting with your highest and most recent level of education. Write down the institute name and date that the degree, diploma or certificate was achieved. Depending on your experience level, the length of your CV and the positions you are applying for you can choose to include or leave out any subjects taken.

  • Next on your CV is your work experience, again, start with your current or most recent role. Include your job title, type of employment (fulltime-part time) and duration of employment. Job descriptions should be detailed and to the point. Using bullets, list down all your main duties and responsibilities and include any additional training and software used during your employment.

  • Lastly, where possible, include contactable work references to enable your recruiter to get feedback from your previous employer.

Keep in mind when registering with job boards and CV databases, they often rely on in-house software to search the CV bank for specific words based on the key skills required for the various job vacancies.
